Current Everyday Skin Care Routine
September 12, 2017
I’ve seen a lot of beauty posts by bloggers who don’t preface the post with their skin type. Skin care products are definitely my biggest splurges and where I invest in top quality ingredients and results. I’ve become more in-tune with my skin over the past year or so and am finally finding great products that work well for me. My skin type is oily yet sensitive. I never used to have sensitive skin, but that’s developed over the past year or two. Let’s attribute that to getting older and my body changing, shall we? I’m still prone to blemishes (which is frustrating) so I’ve got a good mix of different products to target the multiple stages of my skin’s condition.
The below products are mix of my ‘go-tos’ for the past couple of years with a splash of some new discoveries. I use these products practically everyday with a few exceptions (mentioned below). Masks are a whole other ballgame, so I’ll do a separate post on those.
Alba Botanica Cleansing Gel | I’ve spent anywhere from $8 to $40 on an individual cleanser generating almost the same results. Whilst I’d love to get the high-end cleanser to use everyday, my bank account would kill me. A face cleanser is the one product in my collection that seems to get depleted the quickest, so, naturally, I wanted to find a grocery store brand that wouldn’t break the bank but also do the trick. This Alba Botanica Cleansing Gel is a new discovery. Besides the delicious, clean smell it has, I love that it has 100% vegetarian ingredients with 0 parabens, 0 sulfates, 0 phthalates, 0 sodiums, and they do not test on animals. It’s targeted for oily & combination skin types so perfect for me. You can get this from the natural section at the grocery store, or any online store, around the $6-$7 price point. Not bad, eh?
Cinq Mondes Phyto Peeling Lotion | My esthetician here in LA is a believer and lover of Cinq Mondes and has officially converted me as well! Whilst the bottle says ‘lotion’ it’s really more of a toner. Use it on a cotton pad/ball and apply after you’ve cleansed your face. What’s brilliant about this toner is that it actively promotes cell renewal and acts as an exfoliator. I typically use this in the evening before bed but it can be applied both in the morning and evening. This toner is great for all skin types and not just for oily skin.
Avene Skin Recovery Cream | My mother has been trying to get me to buy this Avene cream for years. I’m not sure why I resisted for so long. Before truly understanding how my skin worked, I thought I needed to avoid any and all moisture on my face because of how oily my face was. Wrong. After understanding my skin’s needs, I went through a few moisturizers that were too heavy, thick, non-absorbent, and just generally not right for me. I caved and purchased this cream from Amazon (I don’t think it was being sold in the U.S. for years!) and have fallen in love! I now understand what my mum has been going on about. It’s so buttery smooth and light. I never feel like I have a layer of moisturizer sitting on my face.
Biossance Squalane Oil | This is a very new product to me (by about a month) and it made an impact on my face after the first use. Again, putting oil on an oily face seems odd, but it works. I use this only at night time as it does leave a shine to your face. This oil is 100% squalane oil and is perfect for sensitive skin and will not cause breakouts (at least for me). It hydrates my skin better than any moisturizer I’ve ever used. So, when my skin is incredibly thirsty and the Avene just won’t cut it, this squalane oil does the trick overnight. I’ve never seen a product work so quickly before. This is definitely the most recommended product in this post. You won’t believe me until you try it, so do yourself a favour: get a bottle and try it tonight! It’s got a higher price point than a lot of my skin care products. However, like I said earlier, this is where I don’t mind investing for quality products and results. Plus, a little bit goes a long way with this oil, helping it to last a little longer than normal moisturizers.
Elta MD Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 | Finding the perfect sunblock for my face was a feat I didn’t even want to bother with. I pretty much only wore sunscreen if I was heading to the beach or a day tanning on our rooftop. Of course, I’ve since learned how impactful the sun is on my face Every. Single. Day. and not just when I go outside to tan. All sunblocks I’ve tried were thick, gooey, and felt like they were just clogging my pores whilst protecting me. Not something I would willingly put on my face each day. Now that I make a conscious effort to protect my skin each day, I put on this Elta MD spf 46 and feel good about protecting my face from the sun. It’s uber light and does not feel greasy in the slightest. Reasonably priced and another great recommendation by my esthetician!
Heritage Store Rosewater | Do you ever buy products to have as little indulgences for yourself? If I could recreate my facials at home and get that ‘spa feeling’ in my own bathroom I would! This rosewater is probably the closest thing to that. I spritz a little of this therapeutic rosewater on my face for added moisture throughout the day. The smell is lovely too – lifting my spirits and giving me that spa feeling in the middle of my hectic day.
