With Change Comes… A Fringe?

With Change Comes… A Fringe?

December 5, 2018

My hair update is already here and… I have a fringe! I’ve always wanted to get one but never quite had the guts to attempt pulling it off. After spending time in France for about a month this year with our wedding and after years of idolizing the French It girls, I decided it was high time I gave it a shot. As you can see, I now also have darker hair.

So, let me explain what I did and why.

Hannah, the best hairstylist on the planet, reached out to me after my last hair post and told me that she could give me a toner. As brave as I was, trying to walk around with a stark line growing down my head, the toner would help make the growth process much easier and less embarassing. Toners typically help tone down hair to a more neutral version of the current shade, or in my case, a darker shade was applied on top of my already bleached hair.

Toning is much less harmful than permanent or semi-permanent colouring, fades after quite a few washes (I think it can typically last up to 6 weeks), and gives your hair a beautiful, glossy shine. Knowing that it fades with each wash, I’ve been trying to go at least two days without washing (which is not common for me!) and, surprisingly, I’ve found it much easier to do with a fringe!

I figured I’d probably not see Hannah for quite a while with the holidays (& growing out my hair) so why not throw a fringe in while I was at it! Unabashedly, I used Jeanne Damas and Violette Fr as my fringe inspiration.

(Side note: Vogue just released this video of Jeanne Damas and I am 100% doing this beauty routine as often as my skin allows! Watch out – I’ll soon develop a sexy French accent too – oui oui.)

So “what’s the ‘change’ part from your title?” you ask? Well, I’m not quite ready to break that news yet (no, I’m not pregnant…) so I think I’ll wait until after the holidays have settled to dive into this one. However, I’m sure there are some of you out there who can relate to me when I say that when certain chapters or milestones happen, a little change up in appearance is refreshing. It gives me a little excitement and a boost of confidence. It’s the perfect chance to shake things up in my routine and give me something small to look forward to when I wake up in the morning.

Actually, no, my fringe is WILD when I wake up (think There’s Something About Mary – how Eddie hasn’t blackmailed me yet with a picture I’ll never understand), but it’s fun learning how to tame it each day!

I’m interested to see how the toner fades with my colour underneath and am hoping it lasts a bit longer with the winter months. There will be less working out over the holidays (yep, I’ll be traveling all winter long and am relying on lots of city walking to burn calories from over indulging in delicious food!) and hopefully colder weather = less grime!

I will admit that I still look in the mirror and don’t recognize myself, but I find such excitement in my hair at the moment. It’s a fun challenge trying to understand how it can do such wacky things!

Here’s to being even more adventurous in 2019 and trying far more daunting feats!

Love,

Saffy
